i spoke to my careers advisor today and she told me unsw doesn't hold interviews for the umat.. i dunno if that's in general or just not to normal high school students (maybe for international?)

i do know however you gotta register a 'form of interest' found at the unsw med site through http://acer.edu.au (which is where you can get UMAT info + sample papers), gotta do the UMAT, and i read something about a UAI of 95+.

but i suppose if you get 99.75 and someone else gets 99.75 (which is last yr's cut off for medicine i think?) but they went better than you in the umat, they'd obviously get in over you.

i didn't know until today either that the UMAT is compulsory if you want to do medicine at unsw. no umat, your preference is ignored! i'm glad i spoke to my careers advisor today.. june 13 will be here pretty soon!! (final date for UMAT applications)

while on the topic of UMATs, anyone here that could give a few pointers? or advice? and those who were successful, did you go to the "tutoring" sessions for the UMAT ? is it worth it? and also is the UMAT marked on your mark, or the rank?

there is no "cut-off" for Medicine - they'd jus like u to have a UAI over 95 in general
furthering ur example, if someone got 99.95 and someone got 96.95, but the 96.95 student did way better in UMAT, that person would get in over the 99.95 person.

most people have UAI's 98 or over, but I know one guy who got in via excellent UMAT and 95.00. And of course there are ppl all over the spectrum... I'd be lying though if I said that it didn't make a difference! Just not as much as it did before..

Is there much point asking this question? Presumably people like Weisy and turtle found it pretty reasonable since they got in!

hehe yes well i suppose that is true.
did any of you guys go to the umat conferences or tutoring sessions?
i downloaded the sample questions.. they seem okay, they're pretty much like the stat test questions (for pharmacy). i don't like the ones where they say 'its impossible to conclude from the given info'. like how are u sposed to know!

medicine

i've heard that you can get into medicine at UNSW with a UAI of a minumum of 90 with the this rural scheme, provided you also do well in the UMAT test and in the interview. But you have to live in a rural area.

I'll tell you a good tip a friend of mine told me for the interview. State in the interview that your sole reason for getting into medicine was not for the prestige or income but to help the disadvantaged rural comunities of australia inspired by the' flying doctor service'. Say that and you're bound to be placed at an advantage than if you were to just say 'im facinated by the human body...'

argh but rural australia has a shortage of medical professionals so i think that they would listen...

yes, your point is taken. I think, though, that the culture of integrating rural practice into medical education has been renforced more and more in the past few years or so. They would listen, but I'm not sure how much they would favour you above everyone else. The interview itself is more based around the idea of assessing your personal qualities...because their idea is that if they assess how you appear and come across, it's harder to bullshit your way through. Besides, if you really are serious about rural practice, you don't tell them in the interview. You apply for a rural-bonded scholarship, which basically pays for your medical degree, and obliges you to practice in the country for 6 years after you graduate.

Hey, look here! Just because I don't like the dirt... and the grime... and the lack of movies... and decent frappuccinos (or any variety of interesting cold drinks)... and broadband... well at least cable... and trains once every 15 minutes (as happens in sydney.. theoretically at least)... and the list goes on. BUT IT DOESN'T MEAN I DON'T LIKE THE COUNTRY! *LOL*
