Basically I'd probably say, only memorise essays as your last resort.

Otherwise, I reckon what you mite want to do is, make acronyms, and only memorise the central issues/themes/concerns then combine together with supportive quotes, clearly explain the issue, and dont just say "And the DHC of the hatchery stated..." Rather try integrating quotes together with your sentences. And that, is what teachers call sophistication, if u can get urself into the right frame of mind, then you can do it.

for modern hist: you can basically write approx 5 general essays before the HSC that will cover the entire syllabus. these are usually a mix of past HSC q's and trial q's. Of course, the q's wont be the same but there are only so many ways they can twist the content
