Hey people! :wave:

you know in the chem monitoring and managment topic how they ask us to describe tests for various cations and anions, do u think we need to know those two tables in conquering chem? ( sorrie I don't have to book with me for the exact pages) or can we just say that they use flame test, AAS, and gravimetric analysis...?

well....those tables r pretty important...table 6.1 and 6.2 in conquering. They deal mainly with using precipiation reactions to test fro cations and anions and though i cant say thier a must cause the syllabus simply asks for 'describing TESTS used' but i would advice that u learn them....there pretty helpful.

learn them, i suspect they are gonna ask at least one question that involves you determining the cation and anion present in a solution.
Either they ask you to write up a process to determine
or
they will tell u 'no precipitate' or 'white precipitate was formed' when blah was added to the solution

likewise know the colours for the major flame tests :burn:

Soooo much to remember, my brain is gonna explode! :burn:

P.s. Can u guys please tell me any other tables/diagrams/equations (except the ones in the syllabus) that I should try to stuff into my brain the night b4 the chem exam?

We got given this flowchart for identifying anions and cations:

cation
1. Add Cl^- ions
- if there is a white precipitate, the cation is Pb^2+
2. Add SO4^2- ions (to a fresh sample)
- if there is a white precipitae, the cation is either Ba^2+ or Ca^2+. You then need to do a flame test to tell them apart. If it goes apple-green its Ba, if it goes brick-red its Ca
3. Add OH^- ions
- if a blue precipitate forms, its Cu^2+
- if a green turning brown precipitate forms, its Fe^2+
- if a brown precipitate forms, its Fe^3+


anion
1. Add Fe^3+ ions
- if a brown precipitate forms, its OH^-
2. Add Fe^2+ ions
- if a green precipitate forms, its PO4^3-
- if a grey precipitate forms, its CO3^2-
3. Add Ba^2+ ions
- if a white precipitate forms, its SO4^2-
4. Add Pb^2+ ions
- if a white precipitate forms, its Cl^-

I think the flow chart is too big and complicated... I'm gonna learn the tables in conquering chem. :chainsaw:

i'm starting year 12 on Monday...
could u please guide me how 2 study 4 chemistry in year 12...

well luckily..ur syllibus is roughly 3/4 of our syllibus..they took out virtually 1/2 of memorising crap...

but here are my tips

understand and memorise each prac u do. You need to do the risk assessment, memorise methods, memorise conclusion, know why it happens and accuracy and reliabilty of it. and how u can improve it.

understnad and memorise every 2nd hand investigation dot pt of the syllibus.

and finally be able to do the skills listed in science skills syllbus
eg. critically analyse the use of models in science. (this coudl be ur hsc Q)

Should i go thru the year 11 pracs as well??:confused:
