Worst Michael Mann movie since.. The Last of the Mohicans. It's a movie where Mann actually manages to be pretty uninspiring in every one of the areas he normally excels at. The main problem is that the Tubbs and Crockett are simply 2 decidedly unengaging characters, we know that they're grim, and they're determined, but that's all we know about them, and this setup soon gets very tedious indeed.. So monotonous are these 2 characters that combined with Mann's characteristically stylized use of music, the film resembles 2 hour long music video. After writing such fun dialogue for Collateral, the lines here are also pretty disappointing, pointlessly grim throughout, much like the characters who utter them. It wouldn't have hurt for Mann to include a moment of humour here and there to lighten things up a bit, especially as the material isn't good enough to maintain tension for close to the 2 hour running time. Gong Li i think did what she was suppose to do in a largely unrewarding role (unless you call doing the dirty with Colin Farrell a reward). Her accent is noticeable, but I she's suppose to be 'exotic' anyhow, so I don't see what the critics are complaining about.
