I've always thought Mp3 was above MD, but because of the fact that you could store more with mp3.

But Sony is bringing out a new MD flavour, called Hi-MD. It works like a Net-MD, costs the same, and uses ONE GIG (1GB) discs! And these discs cost $7USD each!

Quote from: http://news.sel.sony.com/pressrelease/4270
Like standard MiniDiscs, Hi-MD discs are small, durable and re-recordable up to a million times without degradation in audio quality. Each 1GB disc can hold up to 45 hours of music compressed at 48 kilobits per second (kbps). In addition, Hi-MD media can store PC files, including Microsoft Word documents, PowerPoint presentations and JPEG images. Hi-MD discs are expected to cost about $7 each when they become available in April.
So 1GB on a Net MD!

Here's another sony site with some info:

Here's a forum with some amazing looking pics and news about this, you should definitely check this out!

It looks as though they will be using Hi-MD for a camera as well! (check this pics on that forum)

Wow! Style!

normal MD's are 177 megs..
and the 700 megs one are only used in MD camcorders which dun work in MD players
I reckon 1 Gb is a significant breakthrough for music... cos its also new tech.. and their ATRAC3 plus will realli make it worthwhile..

Na - I dont work for Sony.

But I'd like one of these.

You have to have a Hi-MD player to use these discs by the look of it though.

u prbly have an old md player which can't read md tracks recorded in LP2 or LP4 compression. LP2 means u can hold twice as much data, at lower rates of quality and LP4 means 4 tims as much. they were introduced about the same time Net md's came out or just before. taht particular md disc of yours would have been recorded by someone at LP2 and that's why u can't read it. dunno why u can in ur hi-fi though, maybe cos its newer?
