Hey guys,
Thought mabye we could start a revision thread on minoan crete.
Just answer the question before you and then post up a new one.
Nothing too lengthy just simple things to check our basic knowledge about things.

I'll start with an easy one

What are the arguments for and against a male ruler?

(Hopefully there are other people online who actually do minoans!)

Is this your way of finding the answer to something you have no notes for?

I can't be bothered answering the way I would for an exam but off the top of my head...

For
- Arthur Evans was biased towards there being a male ruler and did not really even consider that Minoans may have been a Matriarchal society. He went more the way of literary tradition.
- The legend of King Minos obviously is for a male ruler.
- (most likely missed many things here)

Against
- The throne found is shaped for female buttocks
- Females are dominant in art, appearing as larger and more central figures
- figurines and seals depict goddesses such as the snake goddess and Eliythia
- They seem to hold a dominant role in ritual practices such as in the Agia Triahda Sarcophagus.
The Procession fresco shows women dancing as part of a religious or ceremonial role

This probably needs to be added too and I mmight go and look at my notes now. Thank you for the practice :)

Name the eight Tomb Types and give a description of each...

I would probably have to look this up, but if I was in the test right now I can think of the Boxers Rhyton and it is like a jug used to pour libations.

Hey was there anymore points on your first question that I didn't add? More in favour of a male ruler?
