Well, I would say it would be an advantage to be a good essay writer. I think it depends on your teacher, because I only did 1 or 2 essays for the year, apart from the yearly exam. Obviously you chose modern history for a reason. At times it is interesting and enjoyable, but again it depends on your teacher and how he/she goes about teaching.

Is it just generally essay-writing, or are there more text-types that we will use in Mod. History? Speeches?

you don't necessarily have to be good at all aspects of english (eg. using sophisticated expression, discussing techniques) but it definitely helps. theres less of an emphasis on expression in modern history and more of an emphasis on learning facts and incoporating them into a fluent argument.

mm in general i find its a pretty good subject, there is a LOT of reading and writing notes involved but if you like humanities you should enjoy it.

no its pretty much exclusively essay writing/extended response. you won't have to do any speechs or anything as far as i know.

as long as your interested in modern, youll pull through fine,
and yes, its ALL essays or short response answers,

int he HSC ull be doing 4 essays

in terms of english, as stated, it helps if your good at english but thats about it,
you just need to know how to structure your essay's and how to logically process your argument,

focus on the syllabus points and answer them as if they were a simple question,
what i did was create a timeline and insert them all in, in dot point,
and then have a brief overview mentioning all of it!

modern history essay questions during trials and HSC are all ones in which ask you to present an argument

for example:
american' lost the second indo china due to the NLF movement

although this is a simple statement ur supposed to either agree or disagree and then bring into focus other points like
the america DID loose due to the NLF in conjunction with other factors in which include_________________

these are the kinds of questions youll get!
DONT DROP MODERN!

Of course being good and english comes in hand and helps as kc-ok-la explain in the HSC you will be doing about 4 essays and short answer responces so you need to be able to quickly formulate arguments, plan out what your going to write, know what you are writing and then write very quickly.

As long as your an effective communicator you should be alright. But to do well in Modern History you need to love\live and have that pashion for history then the rest will come in good time.

If in doubt try it for the first few weeks of year 11 and see what you think. If it isn't for you then you can drop it.

Throughout the HSC course I had to do speeches, short answer responces and essays but yes the majority and especially in the HSC exam will be essays and short answer responce.

Been 'Good' At English helps in a limited sense.

It can help you structure a 'proper' English structured response to your question. BUT Your Modern history skill's is what you use to pick out your points and present an arguement.

So they go hand in hand, but 6 of one is still half a dozen of the other, if you get what i mean.

Dont kill the chicken, for want of only half a dozen eggs.

**Boy, am i feeling cryptic today or what??**

Dont drop modern!! :p

Primarily essay-writing. Each school's assessment system is different, but it focuses on essays because that's most of what's in the exam. However, the syllabus also requires a speech, a source analysis and a couple of other things as part of internal assessment. Some of those assessments also have to be research-based.

bear in mind that its not your "flair" in language that counts (although it may help to impress the marker) its also about how you pick up facts and use it in your argument. Do plenty of research, look up other ppls work, and use the syallbus as a guide. Don't fret over essays, they can be quite easy as long as you know your stuff and how to put it all together.
