It seems everyone has an assessment on this dotpoint, im fine with ther maths of it all, but i havta work out ways in which i can modify my aparatus to get a more accurate reading. I need to be able to set up this apparatus in the school lab for my assessment task, does anyone have any good ideas of modifications i can make?

  • Place a folder or cardboard around the apparatus to minimise heat lost to environment.
  • Stir the water while being heated to ensure even heat distribution.
  • Place tip of flame close to the beaker so that little heat is lost before it reaches the beaker.
That's all I can think of from the top of my head.

Some more for you :):
- Use a calorimeter for more accurate measurement
- Don't use a beaker, instead use an aluminium can or something that can absorb the heat better.
- Remove the gauze mat so the heat doesn't escape into the metal, however this can affect safety issues lol.
- Use a clamp to hold up thermometer so it doesn't touch bottom of beaker.

use of a styrofoam cup is a cheaper way to accomidate for heat loss

Yes, that would keep the heat in well, but it's gonna burn up like nothing else. Bad idea :D:p

The other prac wouldn't be the Physics one where you run an electric coil through water in a styrofoam cup to measure the electrical power, would it? Well, we used a styrofoam cup, anyway.
