Slow news day today, so thought I'd bring up something that most Aussies probably aren't aware of. Today is the date of Montenegro's independence vote where they are deciding whether or not to abolish the union with Serbia and become a seperate country. It is a rather intresting situation and before the polls, opinion was rather split between pro-Independence camps and pro-Unionist (thats the English word right?) camps.

A really good link from the BBC which basically sums up everything really well:

Couple of others:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4999672.stm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/1091227.stm (little dated but interesting and still good information)

I have a bit of a gut feeling that the independence vote will win from my experiences there in February/March. However, I was only in Montenegro for a day and a half and in a coastal area that is tradtionally more pro-republican. I will have to find the pciture I took with all the balconies with the new montengro flag on the balconies and doors and fences.

I have a couple of other links, but I am probably the only one who can read Serbian so I will leave them out of the post :p

Interesting, i wonder if it will lead to stability in the region or an increase in violence.

Unoffical results so farshow that the independence vote has narrowly won, but of course, this is still to be confirmed and the margin is very narrow. (55.3% with 55% needed).

Well, I think there will be some small scale violence in parts of Montenegro reagardless of the offical outcome (is there another i in that word or not? My English is still really bad sorry), but things have been quite stable since the end of Milosevic's power. I was really suprised earlier this year how...clam things seemed this year. I can see it being bitter though, really bitter. However, living in another country (Australia) for like, nine years now has kind of sedated a lot of the heavy emotions for me.

That all said, it will be interesting to see the reactions to both Мило Ђукановић (Milo Đukanović) (Montenegro) & Борис Тадић & Војислав Коштуница (Serbia) and the EU/Western powers.

Another thing intresting to see is how it will effect people in Аутономна Покрајина Војводина (Vojvodina - Autonomous) and Косово и Метохија. (Kosobo and Metohia)

(Pictures - you can kind of see the new flag that Montenegro will use)

Serbia is now...ummmm....I don't know the English word. Like, they have no water/sea now, just country on nearby sides? Ugh, I can't say what I mean. Ugh. I hate this. I know what I meant but can't express it.

I think its about time they went their own way. The whole thing was just dragging on. Just when you thought when ex-Yugoslavia cant seperate anymore, Kosovo and Vojvodina, not states but just provinces might seek their indapedence. Its pretty funny when u think about it, now the map of the balkan region will look the same as it did 100 years ago.
