you could also make up the units through open universities ( www.open.edu.au i think)...these are only about $500 a subject and are done by correspondence...a lot less pressure than going to uni etc

also, once u finish you degree, you could get a grad position at a firm and then take the extra units u need whilst ur working and then wen ur finished getting the extra units u can start your CA cos u need a years full time experience to start the technical modules in CA (you can do the first module of CA without the experience tho) but i would start at a firm before doing ur CA cos then they will pay for it!

sorry if ive confused you even more but its complicated to explain!!

my problem is that i am in my 2nd yr at uni doing amangement degree and dont have enough units to finish a major in accounting so i cant satisfy CA/CPA and i dont know what to do. plus i want to get some form of traineeship so i can get experience etc. in accounting.
wtf do i do?
Heres What u can do:
CA
completed a recognised non-accounting undergraduate degree and have completed or are currently undertaking final subjects in a conversion course accredited by the ICAA (this includes applicants who have undertaken a 16 unit Masters degree accredited by the ICAA)
Candidates must provide an original plus one copy of their academic transcript and degree certificate to

prove that they have graduated with an approved non-accounting degree; and

have completed or be undertaking the final subjects (four or less) in an accredited conversion course.

(If the academic transcript on either of the above notes that the course/degree is completed or conferred then a degree certificate is not required).
Also how many units do u have free to choose from, it will allow the experts on BoS (no, im not one of them) to help u choose the most important units

ive got 5 available electives.
twisted emily, um do oyu mean take up a job at an accounting firm? dont you need accreditation first befor etheyll hire? yes i am confused lol.
Korn, ive read those conversion courses but they are the ones that require you to have at least >1yr experience in a similar field at work so i cant get into those conversion courses.
e.g. UTS: professional accounting, you need to get into the MBA which requires those requirements.
thus im looking for any other method to complete units fro accreditatiion and if i can, find relevant work without the accreditation requirement yet.

If you really want the accreditation, spend an extra sem at uni and do the required subjects. I know it sounds crap, but if you're really keen on CA/CPA and can't be bothered doing some conversion course at another uni, just invest one semester to get the sujects and it will be worth it in the long run.

Yep. I know at NewSouth you can do that so I'm sure UWS will have a similar arangement. Go to the student centre/helpdesk for the Faculty of Eco and Biz and ask. They'll help you out and let you know yur options.

well they could technically take u on as a grad or take u on as part way thru your degree
a few of the ppl that got hired at pwc in my intake were partway thru their degree....one still had a few subjects to go and he was hired as a grad

theres a lot of places (outside big 4) that actually prefer people partway thru their degree than trainees fresh out of school

you can do economics subjects, theyre probably mandatory core subjects in the accounting major stream but that about it, u usually cant major in economics in a commerce/accounting degree

its probably will have as most majors follow the course set out as required by CA or CPA and they require micro & macro in 1st year but that might be it

Yeah first year core economics is the only economics you'll need for an accounting major. Should be the same across most uni's.

you cant major in economics in a commerce degree? Im at usyd and im pretty sure you can do a pair of majors in accounting and economics....in fact, you could major in almost anything commerce-related in a commerce degree.

At UNSW, you can do a BCom with Acctg/Econ major and a BEc with an Acctg/Eco major. One of my friends is dong Acctg/Econ combinations and he's working at the NSW Treasury (and loving it). So Acctg/Econ does seem like a good combination if you are into treasury or resource allocation.

In fact, for my degree program, we are allowed to do either Acctg/Finance or Acctg/Econ, so I'm guessing the combination is quite useful.

If I wanted to do just finance, would i be stupid to major in finance/acct just to give myself the added perspective to finance (and not do as many finance subjects)? or should i do just finance major?

Quite the opposite, as you'd be more employable given that you'd qualify for entry to the CA Program/CPA.

If you do a single finance major, you'd only do 1 more subject in finance that if you did a finance/accounting double major.
