I'll be doing business/law at UWS (Campbelltown campus) and am very excited and happy about it considering it was my first preference. However, at the same time not only do i have to worry about adapting to uni life i am also worried that i will be yet another victim of racial discrimination (im a muslim girl who wears a headscarf). All throughout school ive had to deal with people who werent willing to accept me for the person i was which obviously made it difficult 4 me to concentrate on stuyding. Ive been told not to worry and that university students are mature and know better than to discriminate against others but it truly is a reality im always having to deal with. I love meeting new people from various faiths/backgrounds and socialising with them and I was just hoping that UWS students will be as willing to embrace me. Have there been any serious cases of racial discrimination at UWS which i should be aware of?

Hello Elza.

I too am a Muslim and this year I am going to UWS @ Blacktown. I wouldthink that there isn't discrimination at uni due to all the students being more mature.

If discrimination occurs, just report it to the people in charge of your campus.

First welcome to uws! I'm sure that you will love it there.

Not that I go to campbelltown campus, but from my experience, there shouldn't be anything to be worried about. People at uws are very accepting to all religions and races, people were even accepting towards american international students - so I feel that you have nothing to be worried about. University students are much more mature than high school people. Although saying that, I'm sure that there is one or two people in say every hundred that aren't. You will find that there are so many races at uws, heaps from overseas students as well as local students. You have nothing really to worry about. Just go to uni and have fun and a great time.

Hi Elza! Im not Muslim myself but i do have many muslim friends that do go to various UWS campuses and they love the courses they are doing and the people that they're studying with so don't worry yourself too much. Its very unfortunate that racism still lurks around here and there but i would like to think that the majority of people (especially uni students) know better nowadays. All that you need to do is be yourself and hold your head up high...people who arent willing to accept you for who you are just arent worth your time. If i was going to the campbelltown campus i would have loved to meet you but i'll be at bankstown. Anyway good luck and i hope that University life is all that you wish it to be!! :)

Not in my experience at all. There are many UWS students who wear the headscarf, being of the muslim faith. The University and its students are quite mature enough and I don't think discrimination is an issue. If it is, you can always contact of the Office of the Dean of Students and they often deal with those sort of issues.

Congratulations on your offer and best of luck.

OMG! Did that actually happen to the poor girl while she was at the campus by people who study there or externally?

You don't have anything to worry about. I don't think it's ever been made an issue of considering that we're all supposed to be somewhat mature minded at university. Not to sound like a complete nut, but I'd like to think people had better things to do than to discriminate against people at uni.

UWS is actually very accepting, considering they have prayer rooms set up on campus'.

IMO, uws is not as discriminating as you may think in your mind. To my surprise, many people go to uni to learn and have fun and i dont think i have heard any slurs or threats or whatever made to another human about their race. I occasionally hear some...but thats with like friends and stuff and not to others. People here are very considerate [thanks chris_ine, i've been searching for a word like that for ages] and usually very nice, polite, friendly.
Ofcourse this is my experience at uws Penrith, kingswood campus. People mostly keep to thmeselves though unless your in the lounge/cafe and poepel come up to talk to you, have a friendly chat.
