I think this was a very tricky question. Polyethylene can be made from plant material as well!
I picked a because you can't actually make cups from cellulose. But i might just be over thinking this.
I'd still stick to a as an answer tho.

Well polyethylene can be made from plant material and not from plant material. Cellulose - plant material only...hmm

so many people put 17 as A.
But the thing is this is not a disassociation. It's just a neutralization reaction to produce salt.

I put down as B. Still believe it's B, but who knows

Yea i was confused at first and put A but then realised it was just a neutralization reaction with equal ratios and all

I was tossing up between the two, as well

But the question said "used in the manufacture" not "used as a material for the cup"
therefore, cellulose is ALWAYS USED IN THE MANUFACTURE because you obtain the polyethylene FROM cellulose.

So i put D (cellulose polymer). You can have paper/cardboard cups as well which don't use any polyethylene.

What if you get polyethylene from sugars (crushed sugar cane) not cellulose

Well according to Wikipedia,
"paper cups are made from renewable resources (wood chips 95% by weight)"
Wood chips contain wood
Wood contains cellulose
Therefore, is not paper cups made from cellulose then? (i.e. D)
