If by 'advertised' they meant that there were advertisments that clearly stated 'this car can reach 299kph!' then he might have a point. If he is referring to the maximum notch on the speedo, not a chance.

The autobahns are NOT unlimited. From memory speeds of 180 or 200 plus will see you being done for dangerous/neg driving or something similar. Further all german car makers (exception of porsche) limit their cars to aproximately 250.
