I've noticed most creative writing pieces involve some sort of transformation or change in perspective in the protagonist- To really show the impacts the journey had on them..
And as such, they usually have a happy ending..

My question is whether we can write an effective journey piece that doesnt necessarily involve a happy ending or self realisation or epiphany.

i've read a band 6 story using first person to describe the emotions of a tiger (or lion or anything that has paws and cubs) which is being attacked by a fire (intended or not).. The tiger got separated from her cubs and later when she comes back, she found her home burnt to pieces. She then lies down and closes her eyes.. It was a really good story with good control of voice and language.. the plot was good too.. It however, didnt end happily. its not really a transformation or change in pespective of the tiger.. (maybe there is, a little)

I mean, any story can be a journey .. a story about someone getting followed/stalked then in the end, gettin killed is also a journey story right. doesnt have to have self realisation?

Any story that involves a journey (self-realisatory [is that even a word?], inner, imaginative, physical, monetary, spiritual, etc etc) is fine.....but I think nowadays they usually give you a stimulus and make you work a story from that, so it's about interpreting what you're given into an aspect of The Journey and expressing that in whatever way you're comfortable with (or what way you're asked to do).

you don't need to have a "happy ending" necessarily.

you should know by now if your creative piece works well or not. if your not, ask your teacher.

oh and to add to that. i achieved a band 6 in Advanced English and my creative piece did not end happily. rather it was a dark story which tells like the "ego and I" story.

keep playing with ideas and you'll come up with something.

A journey does not have to end in self-realisation at all, just like you said, any sort of event can be classified as a 'journey', just like walking up the stairs or even going down them

Even such a simple idea, even though it may not entail a self realisation, can be considered a journey; remember all the creative writing pieces are not marked according to what journey you are doing at school like inner etc. It is about how well you can respond to the stimulus given during the exam using and exploring the broad concept of a journey

Also, if this helps better for our half-yearly the question was 'explore the concept of an unfinished journey.'

i've always interpreted it as - a journey is not the end result. a journey = the steps you take throughout the way. that is what shapes the end result.

the end is not important, it's how you get there.
