hi everyone. i was just wondering if you could help me with my puip topic. I've talked to my teacher, and we decided i'd do something on feminism. I've chosen to do whether the feminist movement has changed with the changing demographic of australia's society, specifically of young women (cross cultural component of enthnicity) Whether it is actually women who contunite to perpetuate social inequality and stratification. If so, to what extent are women responsible for marginalising (what does that mean?) other women.
If anyone could help me understand that a little better that would be great! My teacher can be very confusing!

wow! your teacher help you to choose a topic?! That's great!
To break it down for you, I think you teacher wants you do do this:

Topic: Change in feminist movement with the changing demographic of the Australian society. Using young women as a cross cultural component of enthnicity.

You might also consider Cross generation as a cross-cultural aspect as well.

Your PIP topic is very focused, which is excellent to some degree, especially if know WHERE to obtain your information, both first hand and second hand.

As to "Whether it is actually women who contunite to perpetuate social inequality and stratification. If so, to what extent are women responsible for marginalising (what does that mean?) other women. "

What happen if you answer "no" to the first question? What happen if it is men who - is it continue/contribute? i don't know what "contunite" is - are the one that catalyses social inequality towards women?

Marginalise means "To relegate or confine to a lower or outer limit or edge, as of social standing."
thanks to Dictionary.com

I guess in other words, to make something unimportant in relation to social status, which is what you are researching about.

These are the questions you must contemplate before you do anything else. I hope everything goes well for you and your research.

Yeah look, I think you're teacher has set you onto something important with that point-- the answer cannot be 'no' when you look at gender performance and really, that's what man-woman power structures are based on-- performance and the expectation of that performance in social and personal relationships.

Of course the feminist movement has changed with the changing demographic of Australian society ---- I think that in combining the two parts of your topic, you would be asking not if the movement has changed but if it has been successful (<-- to what extent) in bridging the two entities of 'society' and 'theory'. Like asking: to what extent has feminism bridged the gap between Recognition and Re-evaluation of gender performance, and within that: examples of social change. So if you're looking SPECIFICALLY at feminist movement and theories and it's place within society, you'd probably need to look at what feminism itself exploits as a discourse and as a social institution. And I also don't think you can avoid looking at the media with this topic either, so prepare yourself for research madness. :D:D

Also: if you're HEAPS into the role that women play in marginalising themselves, you would have to look in depth at the power women and men place in sexuality, and how objectification is used as a source of power, particularly within the media. --> you might then look at how young women respond to that / how they are socialised to respond to that and the effect of it in relation to the IMPACT of feminism in contemporary Australia.

And just to add to what gloria* is saying, integrate a selected Theory of Social Change to justify your argument througout youe PIP Central Material. Whether it will be the Functionalist theory, Postmodernism Theory of Evolutionist....which all explains this change and how this change has come about.

Yah-- Nessie Lee-- think this through, the stuff that Hamilton would have mentioned to you is enough for like THREE PIP topics; you're going to have to be very [justifiably] selective and very specific. Not to worry though, you have ages to do it. :D

Also: just because Hamilton suggests something, it doesn't necessarily mean you have to do it (even if he gives you that weird look when you tell him to stop talking and just LISTEN for a moment :D). You should take the direction you feel most comfortable with, because there's no way you can write a decent 5000 words unless you're really into it or unless you're unfairly ruthless with yourself, which wouldn't be right. As it is you're going to have to read a fuckload of texts just to clarify a general direction for the project. (+ yr other major works. I had like 5. ugggh.)

On the Discourse question/thing--- please ignore that section of what I was saying. I just realised it's way out of depth right now and probably doesn't even relate to what you're going to be doing. Ignore me, I'm just lame and wishing I'd done something more exciting for my OWN PIP project.

The women in the bible thing is interesting but I don't think it's suited to the PIP criteria well enough-- you have to interrelate theories of social change and I don't think it could be pulled off succinctly in such an area. Also you might have a dilemma with using the bible as your context, rather than a society or complete culture. Anyway; all of that is obvious...
