Well it's very nice of you to try and tell me about a show *I* went to and you didn't. Unless you were there...lurking (keeping up the MQ stalkers rep ;)). However, unlike Victoria, NSW does not have under-18 shows.

In regards to punk rock, only iconic bands (like pennywise, nofx, etc), or 'brand' bands as Asy calls them, are even remotely successful as its a dead style of music in my opinion, like ska.. It's all about emo/screamo/hardcore/punk-electronica these days.

But back on topic, a lot of bands use it to plug their material as those who've signed up will have realised. It was undoubtedly massive for the rise of the Arctic Monkeys, but here's what they say about it from smh:

"Somebody said to us, 'I saw your profile on MySpace,' " sniffed drummer Matt Helders to US website prefixmag.com. "I said, 'I don't even know what MySpace is.' [When we went to No. 1 in England] we were on the news and radio about how Myspace has helped us.

But that's just the perfect example of some-one who doesn't know what the f--- they're talking about."

As to the internet, the band use it only "to email or whatever; iTunes, stuff like that". A friend of the technologically crippled group had to build their website. But it was the fans themselves who placed the net at the heart of their story.
NSW doesn't have under-18 shows? I've seen at least 4 held at the Annandale, 3 at the Metro and several through smaller venues around the west. Now if we consider all-ages, there are a plethora of those around...

Brand bands are the ones which have become a 'brand' through T-shirt sales or otherwise, ala The Ramones and the numerous shirts that are available and which no kid seems to know what the fuck they're wearing. I'm not talking about a 'brand' of music or 'old school' vs 'new school' or whatever. But if you wish:

Ska, rockabilly, punk rock, are NOT dead styles of music. You're implying that these styles a) make less money, b) aren't producing as many quality albums c) no one is taking them up anymore. We'll probably never have the same success as we did with bands such as The Offspring, NOFX, Blink, Pennywise, etc in the future, but im sure that bands such as Unwritten Law and Millencolin still pull in more crowds than your average 'post-punk' band. The majority of bands still draw heavily from the early 90's/late 80s punk bands, and this whole screamo/emo thing is just a guise to protect 'musicians' who can't write any other lyrics other than those which involve breaking up with their girlfriends.

Its a sad day, when you're turning up to moshes which involve skinny pants wearing kiddies/dipshits. Perhaps its just your area, but having been to various gigs splayed throughout Sydney (annan, enmore, hordern, metro, etc) and through the west (Bull n bush, rsl clubs etc) I have yet to encounter any 'major' case of dipshit-tisis with the notable exception of the Live and Local tour last year, which featured dickheads trying to kung-fu each other to spiderbait's calypso? (wtf?!) and practising their moves outside. No, I don't frequent Club Blink or otherwise, but then again, thats like asking if I'd see any trannies if I went down oxford st at night...

Legally there are no under 18 shows in NSW (unlike in Victoria). They may be plugged as under 18 shows, but even this is VERY rare. They're All-ages shows.

I'm not interested in getting into a debate about it, as whether you like it or not, everything is subjective and anything you say is YOUR opinion.

But when I say dead I mean b) and c). I'm not saying there are no bands creating that kind of music, I just think that less and less people are caring. UL and Millencolin are probably the best of the bunch, and personally, I think their best is long past them. Speaking of Unwritten Law, most people would agree their best release was their self-titled album, which was mostly written about break-ups and relationships.

In terms of skinny jeans...they're just a clothing item. Punk kids did the whole piercing/safety pin thing in the 70's/80's. If you don't like, don't wear it...wear baggy shorts or dress like Rancid fans, whatever. Live and let live. My comment is that there is a number of music fans who are choosing to dress in that manner. I've noticed this at Bright Eyes, Yeah yeah yeahs, Sparta, The Grates, Gyroscope, I Killed The Prom Queen, and all sorts of other punk/alternative gigs...most of them 18+ ones at the A'dale, The Marquee, Manning, Gaelic, Metro, et al. In terms of dipshittedness...I've personally found, in gigs and in life, it doesn't come from any sterotyped person.

I've never seen anyone use/practice kung-fu moves...though if I did, they might find they've been accidentally knocked over. Unless they were really big...hehe.

Real emo (Fugazi/Sunny Day Real Estate) however is nothing like the current stuff thats passed off as emo: http://www.fourfa.com/
There's a hilarious, tongue-in-cheek section of fashion tips on that website. "anorexic thinness - veganism helps here".
