hm i heard this thing about how if you completed certain AMEB grade in an instrument.. you can get extra marks or something in HSC? better uai... or just something in that nature..

is this truth or is it just some asian myth that people pass around to coax little kids to keep playing the piano?

definitely a myth.
as far as i'm aware. that is completely unfair to give people extra points on the basis of ameb which has nothing to do with the board of studies, or the education department.

Yeah... And how do they know what grade you've done?
Or if you even do AMEB exams...

Many years ago, AMEB exams were used for HSC examination. Obviously this is no longer the case, though I think that examiners skilled in the assessed instrument are far more suitable than high school teachers who may or may not play an instrument.
