The Australian said:
FORMER NSW premier Nathan Rees fulfilled a long-held dream of his predecessor Bob Carr when he rushed though the formation of a national park to preserve river red gums on the Murray River.

But the local timber industry says his decision will hurt regional communities who depend on logging.

Critics of Mr Rees's decision last week to establish a 42,000ha national park near Deniliquin in southwest NSW say it shows NSW Labor does not care about jobs or regional communities.

Ian Danckert, owner of the Gulpa sawmill near Deniliquin, fears communities such as nearby Mathoura will be devastated by the plan.

Yesterday Mr Danckert said he was shocked and "emotionally devastated" by the decision to establish the national park.

"My family have had a business for 70 years and I'm third generation," he said. "My son and daughter are fourth generation."

Mr Danckert is urging new NSW Premier Kristina Keneally to make a proper "scientific" assessment about whether she will continue with the plan.

He said drought and low dam levels had already taken their toll and many businesses were leaving the area.

"We've lost the abbatoir (and) we lost a rice mill, which is a big employer," Mr Danckert said.

Russell Ainley, executive director of the NSW Forest Products Association, said the decision would wipe out more than 500 jobs in the region. "This decision takes out all of the major milling companies that have the fixed saw mills and timber processing plants in the main towns," he said.

Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett and conservation groups have encouraged Ms Keneally to implement the plan.

"It was a great decision that was taken by the NSW government," said a spokeswoman for the National Parks Association of NSW.

NSW opposition spokeswoman for climate change and environmental sustainability Catherine Cusack said Mr Rees had pre-empted the final report of the Natural Resources Commission on red gum forests.
Industry anger over Rees's red gum reserve | The Australian

Nice final move by Nathan Rees. Now we get to watch these inbred hicks get all upppity because they can't use their "skills" to rape a precious Australian oasis.

Oh heavens they lost a rice farm as well! Now they can't gulp down billions of litres of water to support a crop that ought to be relegated to the history books permanently. Oh and according to the Herald, this type of timber is cheap anyway and is used mostly for lower end use in railways sleepers etc.

Chuck these hillbillies in the saw mill.:balloon:

Rice is dumb, no one cares about your rice mill, all these shit little rice towns are dying, and why not? they rely on some antiquated irrigation plan to grow the dumbest crop eva

I always love new big national parks, but I think one of the main issues with this one is that the majority of the trees they are trying to protect are either dead or dying.

Um, no. There are many that have died, and even more that are heading that way, but the vast majority can and hopefully will be saved with adequate protection.

The whole logging industry was rendering the ecosystem vulnerable, at the mercy of the drought and the scarily dry Murray-Darling. But with protection they'll be fine.

lol ok the thing is, when you drive to places in the riverina, it's fucking baron wasteland for most of the drive and then about 5km out of town it's suddenly all green and shit

like leeton
lots of rice
but until you're nearly in the town itself, there is just nothing but desert and death
they dont have a naturally high rainfall so rice is a stupid crop to grow and i dont see why they should expect to suck the catchments dry to keep up their unsustainable crop

we'll just import rice from chiiiiiiina and japan, it's prob cheaper

Most of it is imported from Thailand and Vietnam where it rains all the fucking time, and labor costs are extremely low.

Australia is not even remotely competitive. Some politician just decided to subsidize it for the lols.

because country folk are the BACKBONE of the australian economy and these farmers live the TOUGH LIFE and ought to be bailed out of their horribly inefficient, wasteful and vandalistic jobs.

TO be honest, Rice has been gradually phased out for years, being replaced with intensive vegetable and fruit farming. Uses less water and creates a still competitive product. Only downies at deni and coleamboly are still holding onto it.

Also this issue doesnt really have much to do with Irrigation lol. Sure they lost a rice mill, because local farmers realised rice isnt worth growing so they switched to more viable crops.

Rice has no subsidies surprisingly.

http://www.kayhull.com.au/Portals/0/speeches/GreivanceDebateRiceIndustry200801.pdf

Australia sells $10 million worth of rice domestically annually, vs $40 million for exports. It sells in Japan, EU, USA, in the face of very high tariffs.

idk, there could be something I'm missing, but it seems better than many other domestic farming industries. I can't see libertarian economics would have prevented the environmental disaster that is rice in Australia. Putting a market price on water might make a difference. Though if rice was absent, in a free market, some other water intensive industry would fill the gap.

Rice may be competitive, but not when there is no irrigation allocations, which there wont be, because of the murray darling plan etc buying back licences, restricting allocation etc.

No they arent you spastic faggot

They are complaining about a loss of local industry. Rice mills are not a farm, they are a processing plant for rice. The mill closed because rice was not a profitable crop for the local farmers.

Now another local industry is goign to be lost. Rightfully so imo because it is dumb. But the only connection between the two is the fact that they were both important local industries.
