I'm only guessing, and I personally would not trust me if I were you but I think its umm .. like there are nuclei which are all positively charged because of the protons within the nucleus and there are delocalised electrons which float/hover/fly around these nuclei. sorta like this (although correct me if im wrong) =] :

- + - - +
+ - - + - - + - +
+ - + - - + - +

lol im so lame. =]

[edit]

scratch that. it came out bad

A sea of delocalised electrons. The valence electrons break off and makes the outer shell complete.

ps. what is the differnce in the nature of the bonding between Covalent networks and covalent molecular. Is it just that the network structure is more sturdy?

pps. Hey Jason, it's Eco buddy.

ppps. And it's not Phil.

A reunion, awesome.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metallic_bond
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...ic_bond_Cu.svg/200px-Metallic_bond_Cu.svg.png -- I R T3h PIKCHA dat u r looking 4!

Lots of negative(ly charged) (balls); fewer big positive(ly charged) balls. There you have it.

In that picture, the cuprous [copper (II)] ions (cation) are the big blue spherical atoms, and the negatively-charged (obv., otherwise they're not) electrons are free flowing.

I bet the links in the references section lead to a load of help, too:

:)

Good luck with understanding one of the fundamental notions in Chem.
