Gene expression refers to the transfer of information from a gene to produce a protein or RNA. If you cut yourself, the genetic code contained in all your cells is used to form the new tissue to repair the damage from the cut.

Genes consist of DNA with the bases forming codons tht relate to the production of specific amino acids. Since amino acids are the functional unit of proteins such as enzymes, the gene message often translates into a particular enzyme that controls a specific reaction.
