Ok, we are allowed to take in a sheet to the test with no more than one pre-written paragraph to include in the essay, the essay thesis, essay plan, and qoutes.
The question is "A text is a product of a culture, and is steeped in it's values"
Explore the changes in context between the two texts you have studied and how these influence the differences in the values they present.
MARKING CRITERIA:
-Show an understanding of the ways in which social, cultural, and historical contexts, when changed, change the values reflected in the texts.
-Explain the relationships amongst texts, and the different ways in which texts are valued <Ways in which texts are valued!?>
-Show an understanding of the way that forum, technology and media of a text shapes its meaning
-Articulate original ideas using flair and creativity, and demonstrate control of language.
Ok...considering the above....this is what i have so far in regards to my introductory paragraph...and yes more will be added to THIS post as i update my essay Thanks for any help anyone can provide. I'm so stumped BTW the time allowed is 45 minutes.
"Both Brave new World and Blade Runner put forward the writer’s predictions on what the future world’s societies, cultures and values will be in the future. Aldous Huxley and Ridley Scott utilise different texts and techniques, but both did so through the science fiction genre. Coupling this with that both texts were written in context with the state of the world’s societies and cultures, they are comparable in the way that the values of these are reflected in each text and are different in that they were written fifty years apart. Changes in the world’s societies, cultures and their values over those fifty years meant a change in the context of the two texts and each displays those differences.
Huxley begins Brave New World by setting the scene in the first paragraph; the second paragraph setting a tone of impersonality and inhumanity and in the following paragraphs, the satirical tone of the novel is also established. It is these techniques that make up the bulk of the book, alongside the subsequent, less occurring uses of simile, metaphor and humour. Huxley establishes the science fiction genre by bombarding the reader with a mix of pseudo-scientific terms such as the Bokanovsky Process, Podsnap’s technique, blood surrogates, etc. and quickly establishes the dystopia world with the introduction of a caste system achieved through biological conditioning in the first chapter and psychological conditioning in the second.
Huxley introduces how people are removed from the rhythms of nature, the way in which science has impacted on humanity and its links to it. Humans are no longer born, their future life is predetermined through their biological conditioning. The culture of the civilised society in Brave New World is built on the motto COMMUNITY, IDENTITY, STABILITY. The World Controllers, single men who govern the way each country functions, believe it is only through the conditioning that this motto can be upheld. "
