I am currently doing a clipping folder type assessment on Crime Fiction and the related material tha twe are gathering. In the marking guide it stipulates that to get 9-10/10 you must have a

"Sophisticated presentation and evaluation of the values embedded in the chosen texts and insightful explanation for the differing values."

Can somebody please explain this statement to me?

Very greatful for your help.

"Sophisticated presentation and evaluation of the values embedded in the chosen texts and insightful explanation for the differing values."

In other words: Produce intelligent judgements and explanations of the societal/cultural values that are evident in the text you have studied. An example would be in more modern crime fiction women oft play more dominant and traditionally "masculine" roles which reflects of the more progressive values held in modern society - this is especially evident if you contrast Agatha Christie's portrayal of Ms. Marple to that of Dorothy Porter's detective Jill or even Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone. Another aspect of the text that you may look at is language and how it is used or science and its relevance to the solution and a few other things. Just dig through your texts and look at what is different and what is the same, and why that is - often you'll find the answer has something to do with when and where the text was made.

Adding on to what Kami mentioned, In The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes always solves crimes rationally and without the need to use violoence. This, along with the fact that he always successfully solves crimes, adheres to the values of the Late Victorian society (a society with not much values, etc).
