You dislike Ancient? Awww, that's disheartening. As you see in my sig, I did all the H.S.C histories, and my advice is to stick with Ancient, as doing both will better your skills with sources, and your analytical skills (which is great for English Adv.).
As for History Extension, I advise 100% to do an ancient major work. It's because of source issues, the breadth of the topic, etc. (if you want to know more, just ask me). But it's not that difficult. I did most of mine 2 -3 Weeks before term started (the due date) and still ended up getting 1st for it (note, this was a selective school), and I think it's due to the fact that I chose an ancient topic, used heaps of sources, and made judgement all the way through.
It is a lot of work, but it's not impossible. Mind you, the major work is just as important as your focused topic area, and the 'What is History' question. A lot of kids struggle in the latter as their teachers give them bad advice i.e, use all or most of the historians.
Anyways, good luck, and if you have any more questions, feel free to throw them my way.
