I can't speak for all girls but generally girls dont give a fuck about what you look like.. so long as you dont look like a pig your fine.
All they want is someone to talk to.. to understand where they are at..
At times it is difficult around your peers..

perhaps if she is in your class.. or has some study..
say something like do you want to grab a coffee and go over those notes.
Then when you are having a coffee have a chat..
and shut your mouth and listen..

this so doesnt work lol well at least for the girls i like ive tried being conversational id say appearance for most girls does matter not that im ugly. Im not even going to try and understand girls their too complicated lol but i can understand where your coming from of coarse they want someone to listen but them liking you is an entirely different story. My advice would be if your going to approach a girl have a reason and compliments are always good however when it comes to reading signs ur on your own my friend but good luck
