we had to write a feature article today for our half yearlies,
but here are a few pointers/info
- can take a variety of similar but distinct forms
- does not have to be written in columns, though this is the preferred form in newspapers
- popular in magazines
- may include graphics
- you need to be particularly aware of the audience when composing
when composing a feature article the basic conventions of the form are:
- needs to include a headline, orientation, by-line, journalists name
- paragraphs may include opinion, adice, quotes, information, statistics, expert opinions, etc and may include a graphic
- formulate an opinion based on information in article,
as well,
you need to focus on:
* audience
- this depends on the style of the magazine and topic/content.
- think of the audience magazines that you read. compare these to your parents magazines, e.g. dolly and new idea.
- the language must be appropriate for the audience of that magazine or paper.
- you may use slang and/or jargon where appropriate.
* purpose
- focus on the task and what the question asks you to do.
- ensure that your feature article is sustained and logical in its argument or point of view as this is ensure that you receive maximum marks.
- your conclusion should make these ideas coherent and focus the reader on what you have said.
- make your purpose clear.
- it should be both entertaining and informative
* communication
- use a variety of language techniques/devices to keep the reader interested
- consider how persuasive your language is
- do you use questions or rhetorical language?
- you should use emotive language and vary techniques to engage the audience
your feature article will then be convincing and you can convey the information that you are asked to provide
