Ok I have a D-Link DSL G604T router, using DHCP all computers are plugged in and can access the internet fine. However it seems impossible to share files between computers.

Is there something simple I'm missing? Or does anyone have some vague ideas?

You might need to share the Folder you're trying to transfer (Right click on folder -> Properties -> Sharing -> 'Share this Folder on the Network'). You can then drag and drop things into that folder and you should be able to access them across the network. See if that's the problem.

Alternatively, go into your Shared Documents (there's a link in the Sharing tab found above) and make sure that's shared (follow the same procedure). The Shared Documents is usually what opens up when you try to access a computer across the network, and if it isn't shared, you may have some difficulties. Good luck!

My Network Places -> View Network Connections

Right click on your shared connection and make sure 'File and Printer Sharing' is ticked.

I'm not completely new to networking, just only used assigned IPs before...

Yes File sharing is enabled, folders are shared and computers are in the same workgroup. However I am unable to access the workgroup or view any other computers on the network. I can successfully ping them though.
