Neutralisation as a proton-transfer reaction (1 Viewer)

A proton is an H+

so say HCL + NaOH --> NaCl(aq) + H20(l)

But this is just

H+ Cl- Na+ + OH- --> NaCl (aq) + Water(l)

Bronsted-Lowry definition of an acid- proton donor (H+ donor)
base- proton acceptor (H+ acceptor)

does that help?

The H+ is transferred from the HCl molecule to the ammonia molecule forming ammonium.

I don't see how neutralisation is a good example of a proton-transfer reaction, unless you use the one above which does not produce water and therefore probably wouldn't make a good example for acid-base reactions.

It's much clearly demonstrated in reactions between an acid or base and water.

Acid + water: HCl + H2O → Cl- + H3O+

See how an H+ (a proton) was transferred from the HCl to H2O? An acid is a proton donor.

Base + water: NH3 + H2O → NH4+ + OH-

Same thing. H+ is transferred from water to ammonia to make ammonium. A base is a proton acceptor.

it's a dot point, so that's why we need to know it. It says identify that neutralisation is a proton transfer reaction. So we just need to know that it transfers a proton from the acid to the base and it becomes neutral.
