this one requires you to read everyone else's posts.
I start off with a dot point in the syllabus. Each person contributes ONE sentence only. When all aspects have been covered, we stop. Then I'll copy paste everyone's posts and make a summary. Then someone else bring up a new dot point.
it can be random dot points from anywhere :p but preferably within the first two modules as most people have only gone that far.

test it out, if it isn't good i'll just delete it and think of a new one :p suggestions welcome. (this idea was inspired by (^o^)) :D

9.3. Process information from secondary sources to summarise the processes involved in the industrial production of ethanol from sugar cane.

Fermentation requires the enzymes found in yeast.

The fermentation occurs in a sealed flask, with a tube coming out leading into a sealed beaker with a cork lid witha hole in it, in that beaker has lime water. CO2 will change the colour of the lime water

the concentration of ethanol in solution must be 15% or below.

C6H12O6(aq) --yeast--> 2C2H5OH(aq) + 2CO2(g) + heat

i.e. the reaction is exothermic, although you need heat to activate it.

the numbers without spaces are subscripts

i AM at school :p we have exams and i have english ext today '-_- i'm in the library not studying it because i'm gonna drop it :p

From Concquering Chemistry, page 30: Molasses, the leftover syrup from sugar milling, is also widely used. Sucrose has a very high solubility in water; this means that the mother liquor left over after sucrose has been crystallised out still has a high sucrose content, so ethanol can be obtained from an otherwise useless waste product of sugar production. Most of the molasses from the North Queensland sugar industry is used to make ethanol.

  • The best temperature for the reaction is 37 C.
  • The concentration of ethanol in solution must be 15% or below.
  • A small amount of yeast nutirents such as phosphate salt must be added.
  • C6H12O6(aq) --yeast--> 2C2H5OH(aq) + 2CO2(g) + heat

    i.e. the reaction is exothermic, although you need heat to activate it.
  • Fermentation is promoted in an anaerobic environment (without air).
  • The glucose needed for fermentation can be found in molasses - sugar cane waste.
  • Rate of reaction decreases as concentration of ethanol increases as yeast enzymes are killed by ethanol.
