So what is the difference between the new course (2014's) and the old ones? Are there topics in past papers that I should completely avoid and what topics aren't included in them?

Very helpful, thank you! What is the difference between general 1 and general 2?

The major difference is that General 1 has no HSC exam and will not count towards an ATAR. That may change in future though.
