i personally think lost highway, the straight story and mulholland drive within the span of 4 years is the best one-two-three punch any director could give, especially considering he's over 20 years into his career. at the rate he's going, this new one should be awesome.

i love mulholland drive and lost highway was quite cool
i'm the only person i know who thinks the straight story was sentimental crap

i don't get it

anyways

the new one should be good (his internet stuff is pretty cool too), though i doubt he'll ever top blue velvet

well, you're probably the first person i know who doesn't like the straight story. i love it, though there are times when i think the 'americana' is way too arch and overdone.

blue velvet is great but it lacks the depth of mulholland drive and lost highway; it's astonishingly well-made but the fact that the world's fucked up beneath the pristine surface isn't exactly a huge revelation.

i haven't seen any of the stuff he's done for his website (rabbits, darkened room) but i'll try and check it out.

try to get 'dumblands'
i think the first two episodes are free

it's absurdly funny

i guess blue velvet has a more obvious and fixed meaning than his later efforts
but i don't think it suffers as a result

besides
is there anything more striking than dennis hopper and an oxygen mask??

I didn't really get straight story either, to be honest. I was so taken by the premise of a film about a man who drives across america on a lawnmower, that I could only have been let down by it.

Not a big fan of Lynch, but I haven't seen all his works as you guys seem to have. In any case it's not like he's going out of his way to get us excited. 'A woman in trouble'.. hmm, sounds like 2/3 of his movies I've seen so far.

Yeah but Lynch has always been more about exploring visual aesthetics and absurd characters rather than developing plots. Most of his works start off with a broad theme or idea, such as a woman in distress, and branch out to all kinds of tangents.

I've now seen Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man. The latter being by far the best of the 3 imo.

Mulholland Drive was fantastic and Lynch is a movie genius - I have no doubt in his capability of turning out another great movie.
