No Optus is using Telstra's normal ADSL network, which is capped to 1.5mbit for ALL users of the network. The sad thing is, that the only thing stopping Telstra users (and other ISPs which use Telstras network) from getting 8mbit download is Telstra's capped network. All it takes from Telstra's side is to remove the cap, and they could offer ADSL 8mbit to all.

Telstra has launched an aggressive plan to effectively lock competitors out of its copper network.

It today detailed its intention to offer 12Mbit/s ADSL2+ to 4 million premises in mainland capital cities using Fibre to the Node (FTTN).

It will do this by installing fibre optic cable to street-side cabinets which then connect to customers' houses directly using less than 1.5KM of existing copper phone line.

Telstra also said it planned to replace 7,500 pair gain systems and remove other "technology blockers" such as loading coils and bridge taps.

But Telstra Chief Operations Officer Greg Winn said today that it would only build the network if competitors didn't get access. "We're not building the network for Optus, SingTel or any other competitor. We're building the network for Telstra's use with Telstra's customers", he said.

Any competitor that wanted to offer an ADSL or voice service using its own DSLAM hardware would have to build physical cabinets at each node.

But to enable the higher speeds, 20,000 nodes would need to be installed within 1.5km of customer premises. What is currently one exchange build and backhaul run would become almost 50 per exchange — clearly unattainable for most if not all competitors

i was gonna get optus cable yesterday and rang up but they need my dad there to get a voice record cos we were changin fone companies. neways the "unlimited plan" with optus rewards with 8 free months came to an average of $43.xx a month for 24 months and they give u a free mobile for joining them...my dad was home so i rang again today wen he was home.

..they freaking changed the plan.. now there was just a bigger limit (seriously whos gonna dl 60gigs a month) and faster uploads..but instead no free months or nething.. just 69.95 a month (including the 10 off each month for rewards)..how gay..only good thing was they give u a free new modem

12+24 wouldve been perfect..wtf am i gonna do with 20+40???...and now its like 25 bux a month ( 24x25=600 buxs more expensive)...damn them

oh i think i also heard the dude say that optus cable is uncapped..can some1 confirm?

yeh you missed out on the 12+ 24 with free months.

however 7+14 plan isnt too bad. Due to the new upload peak being 12 hours , alot of the time i rreckon yuoll be using your 14 gigs of offpeak data and thats not that bad. Plus you are paying 49 dollars for ther budle and get higher upload speed.

i kinda do reckon they should have left the 12 gigs plan , but optus probably has some strategic business plan for not including it.

I'd love a 60gb limit for that price.....As far as I can tell, if you can get cable, I don't see why your complaing...all the plans look decent for the price.

Funnily enough, not many Sydney-siders do. But hearing of the Internode users in Adelaide downloading at 1.8mb/s is testament enough of the owning-capacity.
Ya, but if telstra would just uncap ADSL1, we'd be able to get 1mb/s download speeds off of the 8mbit available on ADSL1.

I have one thing to say to all you cable aficionados. ADSL2+ OWNS the coaxial network.
And unless you live close to a DSLAM its useless

8mbits/s divide 8 makes 1mb/s, which would be the theoretical maximum, though to utilize anywhere near that much, you would have rather large overheads which would probly cut it down to 750-850kb/s. Either way, thats a hell of alot better then 1.5mbit/s with a theoretical max of 192kb/s >.<

my friend in the redfern block has it. He uploads tv shows to ppl via msn as he has 1mbit upload. Hmm 1.8mb/s isn't *that* great. Ive hit ~1.2 sustained for a while.

MSN would be a rather ineffective way to share stuff I would've thought since it has rather poor resource utilization and cant pause/resume files...Wouldn't it be more effective for him to just setup an FTP server for his friends to access or create trackerless torrents only for them to download...

To setup an FTP server initially i would agree with it being more work and torrents would involve a bit more work I spose, though still pretty easy =/

Each to his own I spose.

This is so Hot.

My BT Speeds have gone through the roof since the upgrade. This is fuckin awesome!
same

i cap my upload at 20K now instead of 10K as before. And since bittorrent works in the idea of sharing, the more you upload the more pririty you get over other people when you download files. hence you can download from more sources and get faster speeds. it works great.

So right now I have the 1gig / month bundled with home phone (free 100 calls = ~$13) for $50

If I change to the sprint I get 2gig + 2gig / month bundled with home phone, but I lose the 100 free calls, for $40.

Is this correct?

So basically, overall, I get 3gigs more for 3 dollars?

yes. but you also lose free months if u have any. so thats the factor that makes me not want to change, as i save a considerable amount on free months. i get 5 months free the first year of my contract. thats a big saving in my opinion. hoewver i still have two free months to go

i think you mean 1 MB/s the capital betters on the "b" mean its a byte not a bit.

on the optus cable speed test this is what i get

Test run on 23/11/2005 @ 4:15 P.M.

Mirror: Optus
Test type: Cable

Your connection speed:

kbps: 12598.2
KB/s: 1574.775
Mbps: 12.3029296875

however that 12 Mbps = 1.5 MBps which is kinda rare to get anyway. i only get that speed on Aussie servers.
