I'm downloading 3dmark05 pro right now.. I'll run a test and tell ya how I score.

Then I'll OC it (stock cooling) and tell ya how I score.

people say amd is better gor gaming, and intel is better for large adn multiple prgrams running.

Well I've OC'd from 324/166 to a stable 405/218

Which is a good 25%/30% increase (that is, if my maths is up to scratch.. which it isn't). I'll run 3dmark again in a second

EDIT: Just ran 3dmark05

I got a mark of 1193, which is 247 higher than my original mark. A 26% improvement. Cool. hehe

AMD use shorter pipelines then Intel, but they have 4, whereas Intel only have 2 (I may be wrong on the amount of pipelines). The pipelines are kept fed from the cache, the cache is filled based on what is predicted to happen next, whenever something unpredictable happens, the cache and pipelines have to be flushed and refilled. Since Intel use longer pipelines, they take longer to flush and refill, as such AMD's make better gaming CPU's since gaming is very unpredictable.

At one point, Intel were significantly better for anything predictable like video or audio editing due to their larger cache. Though recently, in many programs, AMD have caught up to Intel and the only real advantage Intel had was in multithreaded applications due to the Hyperthreading implemented in them, however with the rise of dual core from both sides, that leaves them both pretty well on par with each other in that sector, though Intel still seems to have a little bit of an edge.

A fairly common comparision I've seen used is a ute (Intel) compared to a semi (AMD). The ute can go faster (clock speed) and as such can do more runs (clock cycles) but the semi can do more at once per cycle (due to having more pipelines). I wouldn't say its the best comparison, but it works, to a degree.

Jayphen mine is a Gecube as well, I haven't run 3D Mark on it or overclocked it, but it came with stock settings of 398/203. I'll run 3D mark now and see what I pull...I'm running a 2800+ as my CPU, I'd like to O/C it as well...but ya...stock cooling and it runs at over 60c as it is and when I have the money to buy a decent heatsink for it I'll be upgrading anyway so I'm not overly worried about it.

EDIT: Just a quick clarification on the amount of pipelines, I am pretty certain thats the amount on the Athlon XP and Pentium 4, as I said though, I may be wrong. I'm not 100% sure how many are in the Athlon 64, though I would imagine it would be something similar seeing as how well that idea worked in the Athlon XP.

EDIT 2: Jayphen, wat settings did you run 3D Mark 05 with?

Intel still has an advantage in programs requiring simply very high clock frequency, such as the Intel optimised Prime95 program which perform better with higher frequency and/or larger cache.

If using the ute/semi argument for the pipeline length, if a Pentium 4 were an ute an Athlon64 would be at least a road train. Its length of 30+ is simply a joke.

Sometimes I feel like building a Sempron 939 system with 6600 (maybe GT) and see how far the thing overclocks and performs.

Ya, I would love to do that, though with an Opteron 939 as they seem to be where the best overclocks are being had at the moment and they are at a pretty nice price at the moment.

As for the comparison, I don't think its the most accurate way of comparing them as they really are very different, but it's one of the best I've heard.

There is also the ricer vs muscle car comparison, though I'm not sure which way to go with that as some people refer to AMD as being the ricers and others refer to AMD as being the muscle...

Default settings - but I used a keygen to register the trial and unlock the extra tests. I ran all of them.

1,000 3DMarks? Once you get the 3800+ w/ 7800GT you'd be looking at around 7,000 in 3DMark05.

tehe oh I can't wait.

I'll probably just save up for the GTX, and get a second one ASAP for SLI

You can get GTXs for as low as $640 retail.. SLi em', give them a minor OC and combine that with your 3800+, you'd be looking at around 14,000 3DMarks for 05.

That might be bad though, you might die of a sudden heart attack playing Battlefield 2 for the first time at 1600x1200, 4xAA/8xAF with all the eye candy settings on and getting high frame rates..

At least it's better than playing Doom 3, at night, in a dark room with no lights, using headphones instead of speakers. That certainly will cause heart attacks.

Have you played F.E.A.R? That game nearly made me wet my pants compared to Doom 3, although at the time Doom 3 was scary too.. but I think further I got into the game the more accustomed I got used to the environment.. so towards the end, I was more worried about if there were gonna be any frikken Arch Viles or Revenants in the next room rather than what's gonna pop out of wherever and make me wet my white underwear.

No way should overclocking ability be used for comparision...
I wasn't using it as a comparison....

3Dmark 05 is acting very peculiar, when I just install version 1.01 without registering it its fine (havent tried registering it), but once I update it to version 1.2 and register it it tells me my video card doesnt support SM 2.0 and hence I can't use it...But I know it supports SM 2.0, the system spec sheet created by 3Dmark 05 even tells me it supports SM 2.0....Very peculiar indeed....

I was gonna get F.E.A.R instead of BF2.
Which is better?
