All I know is that it traditionally involved copious amounts of alcohol. And I also know that many people will agree with this interpretation of Conception Day :uhhuh:
Sheesh. Your lack of knowledge is pitiful. Tsk tsk...where's the MQ love?
True, there are copious amounts of alcohol drunk by all. But saying that as a proud Macquarie student is akin to a Christian saying Christmas is just about presents.
Conception Day is the celeberation of the conception of our namesake, good ol Lachy - that fateful day when his parents felt a bit...randy. Ofcourse his conception day being in September is an impossiblity considering Macquarie was born in Jan, but meh, the date stuck - and has since become an institution.
There have been many Conception Day tales of yesteryear from gnome kidnappings, students rerouting traffic and collecting a toll (for charity and alcohol), the year of free beer, as well as more recently when Spiderbait played a flooded SAM bar when the sprinklers went off - our only ever swimming pool!
Major General Lachlan Macquarie, a Scot as Asy noted, was an early (and arguably the greatest) governor of the fledgling penal colony that was known as New South Wales. Despite being a conservative despot, he was a pretty rad dude and was considered rather enlightened for his time.
I personally think they should have bagpipers, serve haggas and scottish beer on conception day for a true Scottish touch.
