Ive been accepted to wollongong for bachelor information communication technology (network and systems management), and ive herd about new students already working out their timetables and all that. How do you work out your subjects your going to be doing and timetables? Is it somethinh we have to have done before we enrol or does the uni help students with subject selections and timetable formats?

Also anyone that does the course im doing, do you know what the workload is like with actual practical programming, im able to do it, ive already learn't java i just hate the fuck out of it, and im tossing up now whether or not i should of done the business information systems course instead. oh well, if needs to be, would i be able to transfer easily to the business information systems course from the network and systems management course during the year?

thanks for any help
ben

The uni helps, but to ease your curiosity and my boredom:

In first year the subjects you take are:
- CSCI103 - Algorithms and Problem Solving (Autumn)
- CSCI114 - Procedural Programming (Autumn)
- STAT131 - Understanding Variation and Uncertainty (Autumn or Spring)
- CSCI102 - Systems (Spring)
- CSCI124 - Object Programming (Spring, requires at least a Pass in CSCI103 and CSCI114)
- ECTE182 - Internet Technology I (Spring)
- 2 electives

I suggest you do STAT131 in Autumn. That way you have one elective each semester. Your electives can be chosen from the IACT additional subjects list http://www.uow.edu.au/handbook/yr2005/inf_addsubjiact.html or subjects from your second major (if you want one).
Approved second majors for Network and Systems Management are:
- Software Engineering
- Business Information Systems
- Marketing
- Data Analysis
- Modelling
- Electronic Commerce

If you have a second major, you need to choose subjects for that major as your two electives. For example, say you have a Data Analysis or Modelling second major, then your first year electives will need to be MATH subjects (MATH187/188 or MATH141/142 or MATH161/162).

Timetables are found http://www.uow.edu.au/student/timetables/ there. Select the subjects you're doing in Autumn, and look in the relevant school. Be intuitive when you look. Programming is IT/CS subject, so it'd be in the School of Information Technology and Comptuer Science. The names of the schools are fairly obvious as to what subjects they teach. Once the page loads, you'll see a long list of subjects with times. Ctrl+F and find yours. List them somewhere. Draw up a timetable based on the list. :)

I think you have to wait for tut enrolments, which is when you get to choose which tutorial you are in/prefer. I dont know how it works exactly, im sure poloktim will give you the down low. Tuts...pfft, who does tuts anymore anyways!?

You have to do both lectures, and later on, you will have to choose a tutorial. This is done in SOLS, but like just before session begins.

In first year, you would still choose normal interest based electives (such as Maths, or English, or History, or something).

In second year:
CSCI204 The C Family and Unix
CSCI205 Development Methods & Tools
CSCI212 Interacting Systems
CSCI213 Java Programming and the Internet
CSCI235 Databases
ECTE283 Internet Technology II
IACT201 Information Technology and Citizens' Rights 6
IACT202 The Structure and Organisation of Telecommunications 6

In third year:
CSCI322 Systems Administration 6
CSCI399 Server Technology 6
CSCI325 Software Engineering Formal Methods 6
IACT301 Information and Communication Security Issues 6
IACT302 Corporate Network Planning 6
CSCI311 Software Process Management 6
CSCI321 Project 12
(There are seven subjects, however CSCI321 is done throughout the year).

Fourth year is different depending on whether or not you get honours (an average high enough to go into a distinction finalisation, or too low that you stay in normal strand). You can travel that path when you come to it. :)
