Okay I can't really be bothered to read all your kanji-filled posts but

(a) thanks for reading my essay, mercury

(b)It's typed, so I had no intention of making it look like that in the exam. (w/ regard to paragraphs)

(c) There is no point in using unnecessary kanji. Quoting last year's marking response:

It is better for candidates to stick to the kanji from the syllabus; there are no bonus marks for extensive
use of kanji. Candidates tended to copy kanji from their dictionaries and these were often poorly
written.
(d) My teacher @ selective gave it 10, so I figure it's pretty decent.

Thanks again! (i just woke up, screw your japanese only rule! :p)

Also, the use of that first "boku" kanji is completely wrong. It does not mean "I" - I learnt this the hard way. I accidentally used it in an email once to Japan, and I got a very confused reply! She (my friend) didn't explain what it meant, just not to use it!

That's not true, I've checked with my (three) teachers. It is the right kanji, but it's not used for this boku in written Japanese any more. It's a throwback to the time when all personal pronouns were really adaptations of other words, in this case "servant". The reason it was considered masculine is the apparent machismo of serving a great samurai lord.

In that sense, it is the right kanji, but you shouldn't learn/write it. I just keep it though because I can't be bothered reverting to kana.

As for kanji use, yes, there are no "bonus points", but you do give the marker a better impression if you can use kanji well. Our teacher has asked a previous (and possibly current) senior marker to go over our work, and was told quite plainly that the better responses often mixed extracurricular kanji and grammatical constructions into the fold.

Basically, it doesn't matter that they're not on the syllabus. What matters is whether you use them correctly, and use them well.

Try not to remain sick this weekend. Get plenty of rest, take many fluids and READ. Just don't do too much and you should recover before English, or get an illness appeal. ;)
