Was it more of a 'people' problem (like noisy postgrads) or an 'environment problem' (unlivable conditions)?

It was both, but they weren’t noisy post grads, they were too quiet, and when they did talk they only spoke in their own little groups (as most were there from the second semester the year before) and their own languages. And the last thing they wanted to do was talk to first years, lol.

Im sure it wont be too hard to find some people to be friends with . There seem to be lots of people in the same position as you. Just get out there and make sure you meet people at various social events. .... and don't worry, im a shy person too (not really looking forward to that first day when i know nobody :S)
