to increase virtual mem:

<win key> + <pause break>
advanced
performance, settings
advanced
virtual memory, change
click custom size

set it to somethinglike 1000Mb to 1000Mb

that should be enough, if not increase it.

if you increase it alot you should also defrag with a program that can unfragment the swap file.

By using "virtual memory" Windows creates the illusion that your machine has more memory. This is done by moving blocks of data between physical memory (RAM) and the hard drive. These blocks of data are know as pages, page files and swap files. When the operating system runs out of RAM, it pages out the least recently used information in the memory to the swapfile in the hard disk.

This frees up some memory for the most recent application's use. The operating system will continue to do this as more data is loaded into RAM. Heavy use of virutal memory causes performance problems because physical memory is much faster than virtual memory. Problems can occur when there is not enough space on the hard drive to store these files, when the virtual memory file (pagefile.sys) becomes fragmented and when the area specified for the virtual memory is too small.
Hope that helps,

Med

The swap file, like any other large file in the system can become fragmented because its unlikely there is any large contiguous amount of space on a disk to store the files.

When a file is fragmented all over the disk, it'll take the system more I/O operations to read the entire file - it'll slow your system down.

This is particularly important for a regularly accessed file like the swap file - so you would want this file to be as less fragmented as possible.

OK Cool. Is the defaul disc defragmenter a "program that can unfragment the swap file"?

Window's own defragmenter considers the swap file as a system file and hence unmovable - it does not get defragmented.

Short of purchasing utilities to do this, there are other ways to defrag the swap file, such as copying out the file so that it is no longer a system file and defrag that file, or forcing Windows to recreate the swap file, have a Google for how you can do this.

I think Nuts & Bots (from memory) was able to defragment swap files. Give that a google too, while you're researching =)

To defragment you can use "Norton Speedisk".

I hardly use it once I've installed essential programs on my computer.

uhh Speaking of Virtual Memory i have a question

If i have 1024 RAM (which is running dual cahnnel 2 x 512)

what should i set my page file min/max values too ????

i heard the general rule is 2 x RAM ... so like 2048/2048

but isnt that a bit MUCH!!!! ???

If you are not actually running out - just leave the settings to automatic.

automaic = dynamic swap file = fragmented swap file = bad
people who don't know what they're doing punching in numbers = worse
