Theres lots of ways, first of all you could use character map.

Or HTML which has too ways. either &(Name); or &#(Number);

The useful list to remember (at least partially) would probably be (case sensitive, especially for the greek letters):
pi (π ), theta (θ ), fnof (ƒ ), sum (∑ ), radic (√ ), infin (∞ ), ang (∠ ), int (∫ ), there4 (∴ ), ne (≠ ), equiv (≡ ), le (≤ ), ge (≥ ), perp (⊥ ), plusmn (± ), deg (° )

There is a system called latex that some forums use that lets you write things like:

[math]\sin x = \sum_{n=0}^\infty \frac{(-1)^nx^{2n+1}}{(2n+1)!}[/math]

And will produce an image like the one attatched. I would hope these forums start using it some time because it is free and shouldn't be too hard to install.

Hell yeah, we need LaTeX.

There's websites out there that do this and produce an image that you can upload, but having it integrated with BOS is a god-send.

Lazurus is working on a LaTeX solution and has set up a temporary implementation using CodeCogs' script.

Use [ maths ] [ /maths ] (without spaces).

eg:

[maths]\int\frac{1}{x}\,dx = \ln{x}+C.[/maths]

AMS have a very good introduction to LaTeX.
