u get them from the uni right?

They are necessary for most subjects.

You get the maths notes from Kopy Stop in Broadway. These are really necessary because they have tutorial questions and some lecturers teach by going through the notes. From memory, the first semester maths notes (MATH1001 and MATH1002) were about $35 all up.

Some units of study have practicals, and sometimes you either need to go to the Copy Centre or Co-op shop at uni to purchase practical manuals.

Um, depends, they're usually at either the Co-op bookshop or at Kopystop at Broadway. Whether it's absolutelye necessary is up to you.

The tutorial questions get placed online anyway. None of the maths notes are absolute essential if you turn up and take notes. They're only useful when you can't be bothered turning up.

I found them useful regardless of whether I turned up or not.

The question was about 'absolutely necessary' not useful :p. But yes they are useful.
