this sounds a lot like robert mugabe- not doing much himself in the grand scheme of things and giving a lot of money to his wife to buy things and yet the country is dirt poor

why did they back down, dont they want this to end?
the reason why is, according to the US, is that this is a regional crisis which involves Russia, China, SK and Japan, as well as Nk and US. So these extra countries are the ones most at risk from NK, and as such should be involved in talks.

DPRK only announced they had Nuclear weopons because of the pressure the US is applying for regime change.

DPRK find all other talks useless if the US are extremly hostile to them.

Its funny how when no one was talking about NK and instead focusing on Iran's alledged nuclear program, that NK announces this. I bet the NK's want to give the Americans another headache.

If the US is still hostile towards them, so why would they want one-on-one talks with an enemy who hates the so much?

The truth is that it's not because the US is hostile to them, but that's a nice story.... DPRK knows the same as anyone that they're not going to invade them at least in the short term.

The truth is DPRK wanted 1 on 1 talks with the US to negotiate some deals with them personally, they can't so they're doing this...

It's funny when people talk about george w bush, sometimes he's a lazy idiot.. other times he's some sorta crazy super-genius always hatching these elaborate schemes to start WWIII.
No, no, he's a lazy idiot who has a staff to hatch elaborate schemes to start WWIII. He just goes through them and picks the ones he likes.

Rumour has it that he bases his decisions entirely on the "WWIII factor" listed at the top of each document, but there's a group of us who believe that he's slightly more discriminating than that. We think he also ranks them based on font.

If the US made a public display of destroying their stockpiles and other countries with nuclear capabilities were pressured into doing the same, then wouldn't the global pressure and trend against nuclear lead to even North Korea into disarming?!? (on second thoughts, prob not...)

No-one having Nuclear weapons won't work because there will always be some shifty country wanting an edge over the others. The answer is that every country should have nuclear weapons and detectors but never to use them and if any country decides to let one know all the countries shall blow that one up unless of course there's a secret alliance.
