Orientation Camp (o-camp)

my first contact with Engineering, and UTS was O-Camp in the week before uni started, 'O-week'. Having enrolled weeks earlier, and only met two people, i was anxious about this raging social life my parents had promised would come with university.
Once we arrived at O-Camp, we enterd the luxury appointment of camping in Colourbond iron sheds at Cataract Dam.
How amused were the boys (never the girls) to realise the delightful sounds rocks make on the roof in the middle of the night. Not that this was an ongoing problem, as the second night many of us avioded the rocks and, the mutant mosquitos, to stay up bonding with the second and third year studnets who had coordinated the camp.
Our two and a half days at O-Camp were filled with a range of engineering challenges, which we completed in assigned teams. To enhance interaction, we were also allocated dorms, with a range of people, other than those we did activities with.
the whole camp was coordinated by volunteers from the Faculty of Engineering, which meant the formalities were kept to a minimum, and a relaxed atmosphere prevailed - a far cry from school camps.
In Retrospect, our camp, which split our cohort in two, has filtered into most aspects of uni life. We still debate which was the superior camp, many friendships started at O-Camp have continued, and suddenly, Mathematical Modelling seemed less daunting, considering the number of social opportunities you could be assured of lining up.
