What does everyone think about this idea:

The Gov would set up refugee application centres in countries which contribute to the boat people problem (e.g. Afghanistan + Sri Lanka) - these could be part of our embassies.

Anyone who did not apply for asylum at these places would be turned back straight away, without any exceptions. There'd be much less pressure to reject people, if the people were still living in their own country.

Surely this would stop the boats immediately

don't they leave because they could be persecuted? so if we set it up in their countries they would have to wait for their application to be processed and what would become of them while they wait?

90% of refugees come via planes so why stress over boat people?
