ahh, the refugee debate.
I'm all for compulsary detention for those who enter illegally, until they are processed. However I don't agree with indefinate detention, and I think 3-6 years is an un-necessarily long time to be detained.
That said, I agree with the person who said they should live where they are told to live. Out this way there are Afg refugee's who have moved to Mudgee, Young and Yass who have contributed to an ailing country town, and who did it without complaining. They've been embraced by the country community, because they genuinely want a new life and are working towards it.

We've got Australian embassy's in countries over there, do we or do we not? Clarify for me, because I don't know.
If we do, surely we can do something for them in their own countries that would make the process easier and more effective.

No katie tully. Not every African nation has an Australia embassy and its not like you can simply walk in the front door if they did have one when when your country is going to the shitzaz.

the notion that you can walk up to the Australian embassy tends to show you are not a refugee.
I dont like your tone young man, it was an honest question :( :chainsaw:

You can't just walk up to an Australian embassy, but you can arrange to come to Australia illegally with people smugglers. Ah, right.

What I was saying though dear, is that to counteract the "problem", if I may be so bold as to call it that, our embassy's that DO exist over there should be doing something to make the application of refugee status easier. In countries where we don't have an embassy, surely there are foreign aid organisations that can assist. That said, we can't accomodate everybody and it's a fact of life that no matter how dire some peoples situation, they are more than likely going to have to stay there.

hahahahahaha

Amanda Vandstone. And there lays our problem.

I do agree though that it sounds suspicious that our immigration officers do not provide the adequate information to these people, as though we're trying to find any avenue available to NOT let them in

You know what, I'd like to know... honestly.. what would happen if we released all our refugee's into the public..
I'm not sure if the added security of detention centres etc is worth it. Perhaps we should simply take them in, give them a medical check up, try to find out some information about them, help them get out there into the community...

When Labor people try and paraody the Liberals, or people who are against just letting illegal immigrants roam free they just make themselves look like fuckwits.

yeah, no problem with it. I have found particular Afghan refugee communities i've been in touch with to be extremely humble and generous people. I'm actually trying to get a refugee friend of mine to move with his family, if they come out, and about 7 other refugee families up near where I live cos they wanting to find an area outside of Sydney to start a community.

I wasn't bagging the liberals, more bagging media portrayals.
Anyway i wouldn't quite call myself Labor.
Thanks for the spelling lesson katie, I'll change it just for you ;)

Perhaps Australia should move towards the Swedish system.

In Sweden, Illegally arrived asylum seekers are detained at first while their identities are established, and then again during the end stages of processing, to ensure compliance with rulings. Children are not detained for more than a few days, and women and children are housed in open accommodation near their male relatives. Reforms in 1997, which transfered the management from the Swedish police and private security contractors to the Swedish Migration Board, resulted in more open, dignified and less stressful environments for asylum seekers.

#Sweden receives more than twice as many asylum seekers, per capita, as Australia, but fewer are detained.

there.
Katie, as far as I understand it, it's easier for people who are being persecuted by their own governments to escape their countries illegally. Not getting Visa's and avoiding going through their governments checkpoints at airports for the simple reason that they are being sought after by the government.

If they were to go to an Australian or other western Embassy, this would probably draw more attention to themselves. Turning up at an airport would be like walking into their hands and would endanger their own lives.

Yay for the suburban community! Anglo-European, patriarchal and increasingly neo-liberal in nature!

Essay due in 19 hours :(.

The closer you move to the city the less all of that applies! I think...its just you have to be rich in order to get their first :\
Most Chardonnay socialists live in Sydney or Graydler. These electorates have average incomes $1400-$1500 and $1100-$1200 per household per week respectively. The other two inner city electorates are Wentworth and North Sydey - the two richest electorates in Australia and safe Liberal seats. Incomes here are closer to $2000 per week although most of the wealth is concentrated in the harbourside suburbs.

The electorate of Berowra which includes Asquith is richer than Sydney or Graydler. You do not have to be that rich to live close to the city.

She actually.
And its true.... i think it would be cool if it actually happens.... probably put heaps into my community. Just cos i may happen to have actual contact with these people whilst many others can just sit back and debate the situation without actually putting a human face to the issue. Why the hell do u think im doing my PIP on it in the first place if i didn't have any contact.

One of the guys said to me that they wanted to create a Afghan community but also be part of their local community and help build the community etc. I just thought it was an interesting example that perhaps all refugees aren't the kinds of job stealing, scammers the media would make out, and really, just want to settle down, start a new safe life and put back into the community.
