Hi, I'm thinking of doing optometry next year. Does anyone here do it? Or does anyone have anymore information than in the booklets given out? I would just like to know more detailed info as to what is involved in the course. Thanks.

well, this course is for you if you wanna go into private practice and become an optometrist...the only other option i remember from last year is to go into safety assurance e.g. in RTA checking for blind spots or whatnot...

yeah but u could search unsw website for more info, if they dont have it u can email the department and i've found that they're more than willing to help

Merforga, Optometry is extremely interesting if you like Bio, chem and physics altogether. It is a very specific course and have a structured course outline. Opt is special because it is the ONLY science degree which CANNOT be major in in B Science. So you MUST do B Opt to be an optometrist.

Optometry has its special course like BIOS1902 Biology for Optometry students and stuff like that! LOL whereas everyone do the normal BIO/CHEM courses. But essentially they are the same... LOL

Hey, i was thinking of doing Optometry as well next year!!
Does anyone know how many positions are available??
There aren't any early entry/rural bonus points/ anyother way to get in except getting teh UAI is there?
Is there alot of physics involved? only its not my favourite subject

Hi And?, each year, 40 people get a place at B Optometry, so competition is high.
Optometry is just like any other normal courses, you need to achieve around 98.5+ in order to gain entry. I think there's EAS involved like any other courses.

You have to do Physics, chem and bio in the first year. They are all compulsory.

hey survivor! u doin med science for getting into med gam cause i was interested in med sci before i tohught of medicine it5self. So, im aiming for med, but would be just ok to get in med sci.

Reason being: med students can specialise into things medsci students can and much much more!

Hi mr Easy, go for med if you are really interested in it! I am reasonably interested in med, but the sight of UMAT/Interview, 99.90++ UAI made me felt dizzy. LOL

And plus I don't want to get stuck in uni for 6 years... And I don't think i want to do GAMSAT/interview either. Med sci is good for me because it is only 3 years, if I like it, i will continue to do the 4th honours year. If my interest is still there, i will do my PhD.

You seriously prefer med sci over med itself eh (ur reasons i know), but isnt it true that in med sci u also study some tedious things like genetics and stuff.

I'm into med or med sci coz im looking forward to specialising into things like infectious disease or (for med: ) pediatrics/derm/. If im forced to do med sci, i'll probably be like u: do honors and then phD, ( i really wanna find a cure for aids! I'm serious!!) :cop:

well, in med sci, you get to choose more than just genetics. If you are interested in curing AIDs/specialise in infectious diseases, then you should major in Pathology if you get into med sci.
You can choose to major in Biochemistry, genetics, physiology, pathology, pharmacology and anatomy.

Thanks everyone for your help. I've emailed the department for information, just waiting on a reply now. The main reason I'd like to go into optometry is the Private practice. It seems like that would get me into optometry practice AND a bit of buisness which i sorta of liked since i was MD in yr 11 of a YAA company. Again, thanks all for your help ^^

Possibly. You need to beat 80 or 90% of the candidates applying for Optometry under the EAS scheme.

yeh i was gonna do optometry but i decided the night before receiving my UAI that i was gonna choose pharmacy instead..lol
anyways, got 98.35...just scraped through if UAI was to remain same as last year....
mm87511, if u're desperate enough, u can always apply for full-fee i guess....thats if u REALLY want to do the course (2003 stats showed that Opt. graduates received $50k starting off, so full-fee paying does not seem too bad)...
If memory serves me correctly, the cut-off for EAS applicants into optometry was 98.05, and 96.45 for full-fee applicants in 2003.
