As you may or may not have heard and may or may not have believed, optusNet's Gaming portal will close as of 01/12/05. This means the removal of ALL OptusNet's gaming servers and forum.

Just for fun, a petition was initiated: http://www.petitiononline.com/optus1/petition.html

I personally do not know WHY they're doing this because, but a rumour has gone around that some "noobs" were conspiring to "sue" optus because they got kicked from the server, and that they did succeed at frightening optus. Damn them!

So, farewell optusNet... you've given adequate gaming enlightenment during the dark schooling era since '02. Well now alternatives must be chosen and there are sure plenty more games servers for many games out there. Just may be having a ping greater than 20. Telstra's GameArena is an option but for those under 18 they must lie "smartly" to the registration procedure to sign up.

I expect a much more streamlined and better service from them after this though. It was obvious the current system wasnt working and the servers were hardly used due to their instability and lag. Perhaps they could actually take an active interest in it this time, rather than delegating a few randoms to it. (who did a bang on job for not having a budget, but you'd expect more from a cable company going up against the likes of gamearena, internode et al.)
