Hi, I completely reinstalled WINXP and have found a default Microsoft Messenger installed in my computer. I have since upgraded to MSN 7.5 but whenever I log on to the internet, the old version automatically logs itself on first. 7.5 then tries to log on as well and once it is successful, it gives me a mesage saying that it must log off the original Messenger first.

I want to delete the old version but can't find it. Does anyone know where it is located?
Thanks. :)

Make sure you select "Windows Component" in add/remove programs.

Windows Messenger resides as a bundled winXP product.

Not totally true. There is no GUI to removing MSN messenger entirely... Do this, instead, and be free of all MSN problems (ie integration into IE)

Start, Run:
Code:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

The default location for Windows Messenger is C:\Program Files\Messenger. To stop Windows Messenger from starting up (if Skittled's solution doesn't work), go to Start, Run, then type in "msconfig". Go to the Startup tab and uncheck "msmgs". Restart your computer (once it's restarted, you'll get the msconfig console back. Just close it) and that should do it. :)

From my now neglected MSN Messenger FAQ:

How do i disable / uninstall Windows messenger?

1. Click Start > Run

2. Copy and Paste this exactly:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%INFmsmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

3. Windows Messenger should have being disabled

If this dosent work try:

1. Search for a file on your system called sysoc.inf and open in notepad.

2. Search for the following line:

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

Remove the reference to "hide". However, leave the commas there. Save.

3. Open Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and there should be an option to remove Windows messenger
