Is overloading possible in 1st year?
Can you overload with a subject from another faculty?
If you can overload, do you enrol in the extra subjects on enrolment day? Don't I need special approval first?

/

Unrelated, but is science TSP useless in my situation, with no background in chem/bio/physics and a not-so-great ext2 maths mark (88)? I don't see what kind of benefits there are if i'm not even fit for advanced-level subjects.

Thanks.

Don't you have to be invited to do TSP? I suggest you do the beginners subjects like "Concepts in Biology" or "Chemistry Fundamentals" unless you managed to get a really high UAI and you are a quick learner. You still need to get departmental approval though, if you want to do those subjects at the advanced level.

I was invited to TSP, I got a letter yesterday. I think I read that the requirement was a uai 99+ and band 6 in one science subject and/or 95+ in ext2 maths, but I suppose my 'science' subject they counted was geography... But I think when you get put in TSP you're not only restricted to TSP 'stuff' of that band 6 subject(s). Anyway, yes, I was planning to do Concepts in Biology and Fundamentals of Chemistry in the first place. I am more confused of what use TSP is when I probably can't handle advanced units (and then some).

I'm thinking maybe they want you to study Geogaphy at TSP level, but I'm unsure if there's any of that available.

I would be in that position too had I got a 99 UAI (98 instead), with a band 6 in geography too. If I manage to get into TSP in second year then would there be opportunities to use it for Geography?

And being in the TSP gives you more freedom to tailor your subjects exactly as you want it. What's the requirement for taking subjects at TSP level if you are in the TSP?

Yes, there are geosciences available in TSP according to http://www.usyd.edu.au/handbooks/science/11_talented.shtml

"Geosciences

Intermediate Geography
Coordinator: A/Prof Phil Hirsch
In lieu of some of the normal coursework students may undertake special project work on an environmental problem. Particular emphasis will be given to the enhancement of student capabilities in the areas of problem identification, problem formulation, data gathering, and analysis and reporting.

Geology and Geophysics
Coordinator: Dr Derek Wyman
Students will be offered extra seminars and/or special project work."

but my science stream has all my subjects planned out for me - there's no room for electives (maybe they'd make room for some as part of the program..), and i don't really want to study geography anymore.

If you are intending to study science further on up until the senior level, it will probably give you a good 1st hand experience in research and poster presentation.

Otherwise, TSP is rather useless, except if you really desire to challenge yourself with extra workload.

As for overloading, I think you cannot overload in 1st year, 1st sem. However, starting from 1st year, 2nd sem, you can overload up to 32 cp without permission, and beyond that with permission.
