we have a range of diverse fauna and flora.
Arid, unwelcoming, pointy, creepy, harsh and unforgiving are the words that immediatly spring to mind. Give me the lush green lawns and tranquility of the motherland any day...Australia wasn't really built to have people live in...particulary brits.

we have the cleanest beaches in the world.
I dont think that can be claimed by anyone who's been to Bondi....or anyone who's seen the bloody stains of a surfer taken by a shark...or one who's seen the damage to the GBR.

we have a relationship with asia that the US and UK will never have.
As in a really bad relationship? Our relationship with Asia is shamelessly neglected. "We are not Asia" [Howard] "we are in danger of being swamped by asians [Hanson]

we have a small population, and yet we manage to make the top 5 in the olympics.
I agree we're great at sport, but maybe there's not a lot more to do other than turn professional and train 8hrs a day...not to mention the recent drug cheats and rapists.

we are a predominantly urban nation, with 80% concentrated in syd, melbourne, brisbane etc.
I dont know about you, but I thought urbanisation was a huge problem...the cities suck resources from the rest of the country and force business/people to leave rural areas....a bad balance

mispelling there you realise.

hey, the africans are proud of the nile, the chinese the great wall, the americans the mississippi.

are you british?

um, koalas, gum trees, wattle, kangaroos, grevilleas...?
yes, what has happened to our environment is horrible, but who was responsible...brits maybe? have you been to the beaches in nice, in other parts of europe? our coast is absolutely pristine in comparison.

do you realise that ppl in other countries don't have such pretty beaches to surf in? or rare sharks to be bitten by? - sympathy for the surfers, but yes.

other nations are dealing with ppl dying in thousands everyday, and we can afford to worry about a single death.

huh, if you think our crime rate is bad....

we have a better relationship with asia than the US and UK - as evidenced in APEC etc. Ms Hanson's opinions represent those of a small minority of the population.

there are rapists everywhere. particularly so in third world countries.

I didn't say urbanisation was good, it's just unique.

Yes I am British and im obviously dealing with a formidable opponent...I mean, i've never been so stung as I have been just now... truley miss australia, you have a GIFT. In keeping true to the heritage I identify with, I would like to back down in a cowardly manner. *inserts quote about futility of net arguments*.
You may refer to me as Mr Self-Pitying-Piss-Artist and I bid you good-day.

Ah, well then, I guess I'm with you: the whole "these-tests-determine-the-rest-of-your-life" thing just doesn't work for me.
The HSC doesn't determine the rest of your life. you dont even need to do the HSC to lead a successful life. the HSC is for those who want to get into Uni after they finish school, or if you just want to complete highschool education. there are so many other things you can do, and the HSC is said to be by others who have completed it as the most over-rated thing ever.

Patriotism and nationalism are forces that can be used to stop critical thought and analysis of a nations problems. They lock the population into thinking that their nation is, as the Liberal propaganda explains "the best nation in the world". But what is that assertion based on exactly?

It's an opinion, but potentially shared by many, though the reasoning behind it is illogical and entirely based on emotion and half truths. It doesn't take into account our own failings and the achievements of other nations. It doesn't have anything to back up the assertion with, it's a bunk statement.

Nationalism wasn't even a force until the 17th century when the 300 or so little principalities in Europe ruled by various Kings started to invade each other and the realisation that having the population pledge alliegence to the Monarch wouldn't get the population on side - so let's get them to pledge alligence to the nation! Hurrah.

I'm not saying it's a bad force, but it does cause many problems between how nations interact with each other e.g. USA and Japan in WWII or even more recently the USA and it's continual reliance on the dogma of Manifest Destiny.

Over doing nationalism doesn't allow critical thought or critical analysis of the nation's policies, leaders, actions and so on. It also doesn't allow a proper and critical analysis of its history and makes people believe that history should only reflect the accomplishments of the nation (e.g. the US, UK, and Australian History Wars) rather than accepting and realising that they have acted less than favourably in the past - but that's it, it was in the past, a lesson to learn from. Most people seem to forget that every single Western nation has acted in a less than favourable light in the past 600 years or so, it's not that big a deal to accept what happened in the past and what atrocities forebearers committed.

Nationalism can be a good binding force which can glue a society together, a society made up of other races and cultures, but if over done, the consequences can be dire.

heh. I'm not really patriotic, at all, I was just saying that nationalism isn't necessarily a bad thing, and that ppl shouldn't be condemned for advocating it.

tattoed guy...I think you need to get some basic history and political science sorted out before you start making ignorant posts like that.

I'm sure the politicians feel the same way toward you.

oh and a couple of us in here are migrants, including me, so I don't really appreciate what you said. migrants are beneficial to the australian economy - aus is very selective nowadays re who gets in and who doesn't - we provide labour, expertise and inject money into the country through investment, consumerism.

oh and hey, he has a grey box, I didn't think they had them anymore. how do you give ppl grey boxes?
