Re: pdhpe assessment: Principles of Training & Rugby League

ok, i've played a lot of rugby league and i know a bit about training techniques. unfortunately i haven't done year 12 pd/h/pe so i don't really know how to answer your question using PE terms and all that. but il try! i'll tell you call i can, hopefully you can use some of it! :)

not sure what goes under what heading, but here goes. it isn't short!

progressive overload/Variety

during the off season, rugby league players work extremely hard on their endurance, and work on their muscle strength/size/endurance hardcore in the gym. they do as much as they can, they spend the whole summer on it. this is to provide them with a base, after which they can work on their speed, skills etc. not that they don't do it during the off season, its just that there's less emphasis on it.

when the regular season starts...since there's a game every week, players need to recover and everything, it gets hard after a while to work on fitness. so it usually doesn't change that much. they step down intensity on gym/fitness and all the drills done at training are skill related, although they are designed to also maintain/improve player's fitness.

training specificity:

all good rugby league players must be very quick. even if they can't run 100m in 10 sec, it's more important for them to be fast over 40m then over 100m, and they need good lateral movement too. so they do heaps of speed training, like the kind of things sprinters would work on, such as running over markers, shuttle running, running in zig zag lines. obviously to be fast you need muscle strength, so a lot of training is put toward that. so leg strength is a target too.

you might find a lot of footballers are very strong in the upper body. this is because they are taught to tackle up high and the first point of contact is the ball, so they can stop that an offload and all that. so they put a lot of emphasis on upper body strength and muscle bulk, so they can dominate in tackles.

core strength is important in general, its the link from upper body and lower body really. there's emphasis on that too. ok, so theres emphasis on the whole body. but there's the reasons why

uhm, that's all i can think of...i hope it helps!
