Is anyone doing Pericles in Fifth Century AThenS?
If so do you have any idea about the ancient and modern interpretations of Pericles.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

yoya. :) i did pericles as our personality.. i don't think modern scholars approach pericles any different to ancient scholars; rather, its more the different opinions amongst scholars.

you've probably looked at these, but for ancient scholars u wanna look at plutarch [life of pericles] as ur main src of info... as well as thucydides [peloponnesian wars] and aristotle [the athenian constitution].

for modern scholars...*thinks* i used A.R. Burn, R Meiggs, and Diane Kagan... but of course, theres heaps others. :) good luck!

In relation to the idea of democracy? Thucidides said "in reality the power lay in the hands of the first citizen". This idea of a strategos autocrator is continued in The Athenian Politaea by aristotle, who those Pericles introduction of paying jurors was a sign of corruption to the democracy.
